A Health Champion is someone who is passionate about health and wellbeing, wants to help raise awareness of health topics, and contribute to developing a positive wellbeing culture in the workplace – and even beyond. This can be anyone in the organisation, regardless of role or experience.
Health Champions play a vital role in supporting colleagues in making healthy choices and to improve their health. Most staff will engage better with Health Champions and health messages if they are delivered by people they know and trust, particularly if they are delivered with enthusiasm and a positive attitude to improving health and wellbeing.
Health Champions are trained through with the Better Health at Work Award (BHAWA). The Better Health at Work Award is a partnership program, led by Local Authorities in the North East and Cumbria, coordinated by the Northern Trades Union Congress, and endorsed by Public Health England.
We have achieved and maintained ‘Maintaining Excellence’ standard for a number of years, and in 2022 we were awarded ‘Ambassador Status’.
Health Champions will know their work areas and colleagues so will be best placed to know what will work best in that environment and can support activities that fit their local environments.
Examples of activities include:
