Diversity and Inclusion

We believe that any modern organisation must reflect all the communities and people it serves, in both service delivery and employment, and tackle all forms of discrimination. We need to remove inequality and ensure there are no barriers to health and wellbeing.

We aim to:

  • Become a leading organisation for the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion, for challenging discrimination, and for promoting equalities in service delivery and employment.
  • Identify and remove barriers that prevent the people we serve from being treated equally.
  • Treat all people as individuals, respecting and valuing their own experiences and needs.
  • Ensure that Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is regarded as a great place to work – an organisation which recognises the contribution of all staff, and which is supportive, fair and free from discrimination.

To ensure that we are working towards these goals, we regularly engage in benchmarking our work against the NHS Equality Delivery System and the Workforce Race and Disability Equality Standards. We are a Stonewall Diversity Champion and take part annually in their Workplace Equality Index. We have also been recognised as a Disability Confident and Mindful Employer.

We recognise that the people who work for us are our greatest asset, and when they feel supported and happy in work this positivity reaches those very people we are here for – our service users. We are committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive organisation and ensuring that we harness the talents of all our staff fully.

One of the ways we support this is through the development of specific staff networks that contribute to addressing and solving problems for all under-represented and disadvantaged groups and individuals within our organisation.

We currently have four staff networks and a number of staff support groups which are open to any staff to attend.

Within the Trust we have Cultural Ambassadors whose role is to support staff from a BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) backgrounds.  By introducing cultural ambassadors, BAME staff have increased confidence in formal processes and anything of a cultural nature will be identified and challenged during these processes and will be taken into consideration in the decision making process.

Cultural ambassadors are chosen based on criteria from the Royal College of Nursing. If you are interested in becoming a cultural ambassador or would like more information, please contact equality@cntw.nhs.uk

Pledge To Be Seen

CNTW is part of the Pledge To Be Seen, a campaign calling on organisations to represent more people with visible differences like scarring, birthmarks and skin conditions. By signing the pledge, CNTW is committing to representing more people with a visible difference in the Trust’s communications materials.
