Everything we do as well as the systems, processes, and structures we have in place, influences our culture but we know that the single most powerful factor influencing culture is leadership.
This means that it is important for us to think about why we do what we do, how we do it, and how we can seek to ensure we continuously improve and always strive to deliver great care and a great employment experience for people who work here.
If we are to achieve these ambitions it is important that everyone working here or being cared for in CNTW shares the leadership of the organisation so we can make the most of our knowledge, experiences, different perspectives and capabilities, and skills.
This programme aims to help us achieve these ambitions.
The modules that make up the programme are as follows:
1. The world we live and work in – our personal and collective/shared leadership challenges
This online workshop brings staff and service users and carers together to explore:
2. Leading and Managing Teams Well
Workshops follow on from Module 1 and the emphasis will be on further developing, building, refreshing people management capabilities and skills and on colleagues gaining further understanding of the contribution they make to the provision of great care and great employee experience.
Workshop A – Management/Leadership
Exploring what it means to be a leader/manager in today’s NHS and in CNTW, the differences between leadership and management and an opportunity to develop or refresh core skills.
Workshop B – Managing the team – Developing a high performing team
An opportunity to consider how to develop and maintain a high performing team, the challenges we may face, why teams behave as they do and what we may need (in our tool box) to help us do this effectively and routinely.
Workshop C – Conversations
The ability to have constructive conversations is key to being an effective manager and leader, but it isn’t always an easy thing to do. This practical workshop will help skill people to do this well, no matter the situation they find themselves in.
Workshop D – Managing Change
Change is inevitable and as a learning organisation we must continue to transform and improve. This workshop will consider drivers for change and resistance factors, and introduce change management tools and techniques for leaders to draw upon. The challenges of maintaining wellbeing during periods of change, which often occur in parallel to the delivery of ‘business as usual’, will also be explored.
Workshop E – Healthy and Well Workforce
This workshop will help participants consolidate all they have learned/explored and consider what this means for their personal resilience and the resilience of their colleagues and teams. The workshop will allow space and time for teams to think about and or develop local recovery plans based on recent covid experiences and more broadly in anticipation of the planned transformation work driven by the NHS Long Term Plan and Mental Health 5 year plan including the transformation of community services.
3. Leading and Managing Services with Impact – leading through values
The module will further build on learning from previous sessions and provide colleagues with space and support to consider how their impact adds value across their services. It will explore how combining and aligning individual collective strengths can enable us to develop a shared vision of an outcome-focused culture, one where people are at the heart of all we do.
4. The Organisation and System Leader
This module will help us consider and debate our individual and collective behaviours and contribution to developing a culture that brings about inclusive and collective leadership within CNTW and across organisational boundaries – place and system working, exploring the differences between organisational and place/system working and how we strike a balance between the two, ensuring we keep the patient at the centre of all we do.
Key to this will be reflecting on, developing, strengthening attributes, capabilities and skills needed to help us do this with an emphasis on collaboration, partnering, networking and alliances.
What will being part of this programme mean for me?
For those of us working in CNTW, our group/corporate services leaders will determine which modules we will attend. The focus is on developing teams and extended teams and so we will see clinical and corporate services staff sharing, learning, developing, and making improvements together. We will all attend the first module but attendance at other modules will be determined by the job we do now and development identified during our annual appraisal discussion.
Service Users and Carers will be invited to attend the first module and following this, the Trust’s Service User and Carer Leadership Development Programme. Other development opportunities will also be available. We aim to ensure that service users and staff continue to share, learn, develop and work together beyond the programme to continuously improve the care we give and the way we give it.
