Salary Sacrifice vs Net Deduction

As an employee, you have two different options for purchasing goods and paying for them monthly out of your salary. This can help you spread out the cost of a big new purchase, and can sometimes help you save money. Payments being taken directly from your salary also means that you never need to worry about missing a payment for something you have bought through one of the schemes.

Our staff benefits partner Perkbox gives you the option to pay for your purchase via salary sacrifice. Our other partner SmartTech lets you pay using a net deduction. These are both types of ‘payroll pay schemes’.

The choice is yours, but it’s important to understand the differences between these two payment methods. Here’s an overview of what you should consider if you’re thinking about making payments for a new purchase direct from your salary each month…

When paying for goods via salary sacrifice using Perkbox, the payment is taken out of your ‘gross pay’ – that’s your salary before pension, tax and National Insurance is taken from it. This means that once the payment is taken from your pay, you might save money paying less tax and National Insurance. It also means your pension contributions may be calculated on a lower rate of pay. It may also impact other pay such as maternity or statutory pay. You should find out more information on how your employment package may be affected by using a salary sacrifice scheme before using it to buy something.

(Salary sacrifice is only available for buying home electronics from Perkbox, and bikes/bike accessories via the Cycle to Work scheme.)

When paying for goods via net salary deductions using SmartTech, the payment is taken from your salary amount after your pension, tax and National insurance contributions have been paid. This means that they will not make a difference to your total annual earnings, and will not impact calculations for maternity pay etc. You also won’t make any savings on the amount of tax or National Insurance you pay, and your pension will not be impacted. (You can buy home electronics and white goods from SmartTech.)
